NEW MOON
New Moon by Stephenie Meyer
New Moon is the second book in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer – and according to the author this book is all about losing true love. The title refers to the darkest phase of the lunar cycle – and the bleakest phase of Bella Swan’s life. Things have been heating up between Bella and her cold-blooded vampire boyfriend until his family gathers together to celebrate her birthday. That’s the point things go terribly wrong when Bella accidently cuts herself. ‘Dazed and disorientated, I looked up from the bright red blood pulsing out of my arm – into the fevered eyes of the six suddenly ravenous vampires.’ Realizing the danger he and his family pose to Bella, Edward makes the decision to leave her forever.
Bella is inconsolable for a time, slipping into a downward spiral of depression and lethargy, until she discovers that reckless behaviour allows her to hear Edward’s warning voice in her head. She begins living as dangerously as possible from then on, her adventures wild and dare-devilish, and she develops a close friendship with Jacob Black in the process in their shared adventures with motorbikes. Many will miss the presence of Edward for much of this book, but New Moon is very much Jacob’s story. He emerges as a highly intriguing character, struggling with the changes in his own life – that of being able to transform at will into a wolf, along with other members of his pack. He is a hot-blooded hero who yearns for Bella’s love. Less romantic, but more dangerous than Twilight, this is a fabulous read and one that will have readers considering which of these two protagonists – vampire Edward or shape-shifting werewolf Jacob – is really worthy of Bella’s love. This is a superb piece of storytelling that will leave you breathless for the third instalment in the series.
